Name: Man Ray
Year of Birth & Death: (1890 - 1976)
Biography: He started as an architect, but ended up as a painter. He was pushed towards abstraction by the New York Armory Show in 1913, and paintings like Sguidilla (1919) sprung from this. Upon meeting Marcel Duchamp, and hearing about "readymades," he was drawn into the Dada movement. He moved to Paris in 1921, and worked in several areas, such as photography, portraits, and nudes. He is also known to have made a Talking Picture, by attaching a gramophone to one of his works. He produced an album of what he called "rayograms," and entitled it Champs delicieux. He made several films during the period between 1927 and 1929, including Emak Bakia (1927) and Etoile de Mer (1928). From 1940 to 1950, he lived in the United States, and when he returned to Paris, he continued his painting and photography. He exhibited his Shakespearean Equations (1948 – 1950), a series of paintings inspired by mathematical objects, at the Galerie Furstemberg in 1954.
