He was a founding father of the revolutionary Surrealist group (1946 - 8) and the Cobra group (1948 – 51). He was a writer and a poet and a painter of calligraphic style. His first solo exhibition was in 1949. He is known for the painting “Logogram: Space Turning Four Forms to Good Account” (1971).
